The Art of Pen Kalamkari
Kalam means pen, kari means work. Long before it became saree wear, this technique was used on temple cloths to narrate the epics for pilgrims. We still draw every outline freehand with a tamarind-twig pen, exactly as it has been done in Srikalahasti for generations.

Mordanting
Cloth is treated in myrobalan and buffalo milk so natural dyes bind and stay fast.
Hand-Drawing
The outline is drawn freehand with a tamarind-twig kalam dipped in fermented iron liquor.
Natural Dyeing
Colour is built in layers from madder root, indigo and myrobalan, washed between each stage.
Sun-Drying & Finishing
Each piece is sun-dried, checked by hand and finished before it ever reaches the shop floor.
